Dr. Forcum is one of the early adopters of the use of kinesiology tape in the mid-1990s. In the process he innovated several taping techniques and applications. He is most recognized for taping the majority of US Olympic athletes during the summer games in 2008 in Beijing China. This was known as a coming out party for kinesiology tape. Prior to the Olympic use was rare and little was known about the colorful tape.
Studies have shown this kinesiology tape to be very effective for reducing of pain and improving proprioception. Proprioception is your bodies perception of where it is in space. It example of which might balancing or targeting. Depending how the tape is applied, it can reduce muscle tone to increasing range of motion. Other applications may increase tone and stability. Other applications c reduce bruising and swelling.
The use of kinesiology tape is very different from standard athletic taping. Standard athletic tape compressed and limits range of motion and is only effective for a relatively short period of time. Kinesiology taping allows for full range of motion and is typically worn for 3 to 7 days.
Dr. Forcum has taught programs on kinesiology tape application internationally.
